Dr Ang Peng Tiam, born in 1958, was educated at Anglo-Chinese School. In recognition of his academic and extra-curricular achievements, he was awarded the President's scholarship in 1977 to study Medicine at the National University of Singapore. He graduated with Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery in 1982.

He did his residency in Internal Medicine and was conferred the Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 1986. He was awarded the Prof Sir Gordon Arthur Ransome Gold medal for being the top candidate in the Clinical Examinations. In the same year, he passed the membership exams and was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom).

Recognising the need for medical oncologists in Singapore, the Singapore Government awarded him a HMDP fellowship for advanced training in Medical Oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Institute, Houston, Texas. He went on to a second year of fellowship in Oncology at Stanford University Medical Centre.

Upon completion of his training in Medical Oncology, Dr Ang was appointed the founding Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at Singapore General Hospital in 1991. He held the concurrent post of Director of the Oncology Centre and Clinical Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

He was admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Singapore in 1990, Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1993, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 1995, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 1997. He is a Board-certified member of the European Society of Medical Oncology, member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and member of the International Society of Haematology. He is President of the Singapore Society of Oncology.

He is currently practicing as a Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist at Parkway Cancer Centre at Mount Elizabeth Hospital but continues to serve as a Visiting Consultant at Singapore General Hospital. He maintains a keen interest in research and has published and presented more than 100 papers and abstracts. He was awarded Singapore's National Science Award in 1996 for his outstanding contributions in Medical Research.
